Jeff Bezos Says AI Could Enable Three-Day Workweeks

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said that productivity gains enabled by artificial intelligence could allow people to support their families by working three days a week. Bezos, who argued that the technology could lead to labor shortages rather than mass unemployment, made these remarks at a time when e-commerce giant Amazon has eliminated approximately 30,000 corporate positions and initiated new layoffs in its retail operations.

Jeff Bezos: Families Could Live on a Single Income

Speaking to Fox News anchor Bret Baier, Jeff Bezos stated that artificial intelligence technologies could transform working life by increasing productivity. Bezos said that some employees could eventually be able to support their families by working three days a week, adding that the need for a second income in households where two people work could disappear. Emphasizing that he disagrees with predictions that artificial intelligence will reduce employment, Bezos suggested that companies could struggle to find employees as people choose to work less.

Bezos Discusses the Artificial Intelligence Bubble

Responding to questions about whether a financial bubble is forming in artificial intelligence investments, Bezos stated that it is difficult to assess the current situation with certainty. Arguing that the technology is real and permanent, Bezos said that investors could experience financial losses but that the innovations developed would not disappear. He stated that financing a large number of ideas in the field of artificial intelligence could provide benefits to society.

Bezos also announced that Project Prometheus, a venture he co-founded and co-leads as co-CEO, is working on artificial intelligence tools that simplify engineering and physical product development processes.

New Layoffs in Amazon's E-Commerce Division

Around the same time as Jeff Bezos' remarks, Amazon launched a new round of layoffs in its Stores division, which manages the company's main e-commerce platform. The latest job cuts, affecting customer service, marketplace seller support, and retail engineering teams in the United States, India, and the United Kingdom, were reported to involve fewer than 1,000 employees.

The company has eliminated approximately 30,000 corporate positions since October 2025. Rather than directly attributing the layoffs to artificial intelligence, Bezos stated that the workforce was being reorganized following extensive hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet increased e-commerce demand.

As Amazon restructures its workforce, it continues to invest in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company's capital expenditures in 2026, particularly on data centers and related technologies, are expected to exceed $200 billion. E-commerce operations, digital retail services, and technology infrastructure are among Amazon's core areas of activity.
