TikTok Shop has signed an exclusive agreement with UPS to simplify the returns process for its e-commerce operations in the United States. Under the partnership, customers will be able to drop off purchased products at approximately 10,000 locations without putting them in a box or preparing a return label. The new system will operate through Happy Returns, which is owned by UPS.
Boxes and Labels No Longer Required for TikTok Shop Returns
Under the new system, consumers will be able to take products they wish to return to Happy Returns locations at Ulta Beauty, Staples, and UPS stores. Staff will scan and package the products before sending the returns to processing centers in consolidated shipments. The service will be available both to sellers that manage their own order fulfillment and to businesses using the platform’s logistics services.
Patrick Nommensen, Head of Strategic Initiatives at TikTok Shop, said the partnership aims to make the returns process faster, easier, and more reliable for customers. The company expects a smoother returns experience to help strengthen consumer trust and loyalty.
The $850 Billion Returns Economy in E-Commerce
According to data from the U.S. National Retail Federation, the total value of returns in the retail sector reached approximately $850 billion in 2025. While around 20 percent of online sales are returned, data from Blue Yonder shows that returns cost retailers an average of approximately 27 percent of a product’s sale price.
As UPS increases its focus on reverse logistics services, which can generate higher margins than standard e-commerce parcel deliveries, the agreement with TikTok expands the company’s operations in an area where it competes with rivals such as FedEx and Amazon.
Artificial Intelligence to Be Used Against Return Fraud
Happy Returns also uses artificial intelligence technology in its returns processes. The system can identify suspicious packages and flag them for human review. The aim is to reduce retailers’ losses resulting from fraudulent or improper returns.
David Sobie, CEO and co-founder of Happy Returns, said the new model will help TikTok Shop sellers reduce return fraud, return products to inventory more quickly, and strengthen customer loyalty.
Retail Brand Network Expands in Social Commerce
TikTok Shop, which launched in the United States in September 2023, continues to expand its e-commerce operations through content creators, sponsored posts, and a social media-driven shopping model. Retail brands such as Ulta Beauty and PacSun are also among the companies reaching consumers through the platform.
